There are events that come and go, and then there are moments that leave a lasting mark on everyone involved. The Ron Ogi Beach Seminar at Magic Island was one such event—an extraordinary day of martial arts training, camaraderie, and personal growth in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Setting the Stage
The seminar began with the warmth of Hawaiian sun and a welcoming introduction of the teaching staff at 9:15 AM. From the very first moments, there was a sense of excitement and anticipation in the air as martial artists from all over gathered to learn from some of the finest instructors in the world.

First Clinic: Sifu Jeffery Lam (Fut Ga Kuen – Hung Gar)

Sifu Jeffery Lam kicked off the day by teaching powerful Hung Gar techniques, breaking them down into three essential parts: a little internal, a little external, and what he called “the dance.” He emphasized body conditioning and breathing as key elements of achieving what he termed a “tempered body condition,” critical for effective practice.

Sifu Lam’s teaching style was soft yet firm, ensuring everyone grasped the Hung Gar
principle of finishing confrontations swiftly: “no matter what they touch, they want to break it.” He introduced the basic daup (dop) block, focusing on control and precision. Participants paired up to practice as he offered personal corrections—an experience many will remember for years to come.

Second Clinic: Colin Fong (Stunt Work in Movies & Television)

Next, professional stuntman Colin Fong shared a fascinating look into the world of stunt work. He explained how the stunt performer’s main job is to make the star look good, then demonstrated the art of the “sell,” camera angles, and taking bumps. Participants partnered up to practice stunt punches under his careful guidance.

This clinic was both engaging and eye-opening, offering everyone a glimpse into how martial arts skills translate to the silver screen.
Third Clinic: Professor Darrell Gordon (American Combat Jujitsu)

Professor Darrell Gordon, inheritor of American Combat Jujitsu, led a fast-paced and practical session alongside his uke, Kevin Spurill. He demonstrated modified small circle jujitsu techniques, pain compliance holds, hammerlock escort holds, and groundwork

sharing pearls of wisdom such as:
“Pain makes a believer.”
“L.O.V.E. – Level of Violence Employed.”
His dynamic style energized the group, driving home the effectiveness of these techniques and the importance of always restomping the groin.

Fourth Clinic: Professor Bob Reish (Danzan Ryu Jujitsu / Jeet Kune Do)

Professor Bob Reish introduced his palming system, which was strikingly similar to what we practice back home in New Zealand—only with the addition of atemi jitsu (striking techniques) integrated throughout, which we know as long arm and empi.
I also had the pleasure of training with Professor Charles Goodman during this session and appreciated his smooth,

flowing application of techniques. Professor Reish himself was soft-spoken, measured, adaptive, and deliberate in his movement and instruction. His class brought a comforting familiarity while adding new layers to our understanding.

Fifth Clinic: Michael Larsen & Davida Kwok (Life Long Massage)

Michael Larsen and Davida Kwok from Life Long Massage delivered a truly informative and deep introduction to restorative massage techniques. Participants paired up to practice under their expert guidance, learning how massage can aid recovery, enhance flexibility, and improve overall well-being—a vital lesson for martial artists who often push their bodies to the limit.
This session was not just relaxing but empowering, providing practical tools for self-care and partner care.
Community, Food, and Reflection
After the fifth clinic, we paused for group photos, then enjoyed a delicious BBQ lunch prepared by one of Ron’s friends—now everyone’s friends—Dave and a beautiful team of wahine working gracefully in the background. The sense of community and Co-operation
and Ohana was evident thru out the entire day.
With spirits high and bellies full, participants enjoyed some well-deserved downtime before diving into the final highlight of the day.

Q&A Session with Legends
The seminar concluded with an unforgettable Q&A session featuring martial arts luminaries:

GGM Al Dacascos
GGM De La Cruz
Professor James Muro
Professor Bob Reish
Sifu Jeffery Lam
Sifu Patrick Hodges
Colin Fong
Topics ranged from Bruce Lee’s legacy and motivations in training to family dynamics, balance, and personal experiences. This candid conversation shattered myths, inspired reflection, and offered insights that could only come from decades of dedication and mastery. Truly, it was a “you had to be there” moment.

Final Thoughts
The Ron Ogi Beach Seminar was more than just a day of training—it was a celebration of martial arts, shared knowledge, and lasting friendships. Whether practicing powerful Hung Gar, exploring cinematic stunt techniques, diving into practical jujitsu, or learning restorative massage, every moment was filled with learning and laughter.
Mahalo to everyone who made this day possible, and to the incredible instructors who gave so generously of their time and expertise. The openness and relaxed atmosphere created an environment truly conducive to deep learning and meaningful connections.
I look forward to this becoming a paid event on the martial arts calendar if Ron Ogi wishes to take it in that direction, as I believe it could become a fantastic standalone event. Should it return, I will be the first in line to sign up for the next one!
